Outsourcing for Affordable Search Engine Optimization I was recently amazed to find out that some U.S. based Search Engine Optimization companies are charging up to $2,500 per month for SEO services. Now, I have to ask myself...why? Is it because, as they say, there are the "only" ones that truly understand search engines? Is it because they are better...

Are Vampire Clients Sucking the Life Out of Your Business? I hear freelance horror stories on a fairly regular basis… Unanticipated hours spent trying to please a single client that won’t be pleased, countless revisions when the client doesn’t even know what he or she wants, doing all of this after the client argued for a huge discount in the first place. A few hours ago I reported that http://72.14.205.100/ had finished a backlink export. This was noticed by most webmasters over at Digital Point Forums as well as webmasterworld.com. Well, seems like that datacenter has reverted back to the data it had before.

What does that mean for the PageRank Update? Honestly, I’m not sure since I don’t work for Google, but probaby we will have to wait for the BL export again. After that we should see a PageRank Toolbar Export.

The last update was 94 days ago…we wait.

UPDATE: 5:07am US, Looks lke it has finally started. Several datacenters have gone offline, on more than 1 Datacenter one of my sites went from PR3 to PR0. Should begin recalculating pagerank in a few hours (let’s hope).

UPDATE: 7:28am, Established websites are now starting to see changes at www.digpagerank.com on DC=18. Those veterans at DP are also confirming this…I’m now waiting to see how my sites have fared.

UPDATE: 3:24 am Saturday, According to inside sources, updating is now happening on multiple datacenters. This is most probably an update, not a rollback nor data flux. We are now waiting to see changes on the Vibrant DCs.

Product Review – Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate

First of all, I would like to sincerely appologize to my readers for my unannouced break from posting. However, if any of you have ever been customers or clients of any type, I’m sure that you will appreciate the fact that I have been very busy attending to my clients needs.

Obviously I am a little behind schedule. Here is my review of Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition:

While I am NOT a huge MS fan, I must admit that this is the best operating system I have ever seen, with so many very cool features. I love the glass windows and the Flip3D is simply amazing. The new sidebar feature is cool and very functional, with gadgets readily available on Live Gallery Beta.

There are only two drawbacks to using Vista Ultimate;

  1. The cost. At $400 retail, it seems that Gates & Co are out-pricing themselves and even more pirating of Windows software is inevitable. I have seen (but not tested) several ways to “crack” the Vista activation process and while I in no way condone this practice, I can see the motivation that people have. Everyone wants the best, but not everyone can afford it.
  2. Hardware resources. This OS requires at least 1GB of virtual memory (RAM) to operate correctly and efficiently. Not to mention that you will need a graphics card with at least 128MB memory. My Intel mobile 945GM chipset runs just fine with the downloaded driver (WDDM).

In my opinion, it is worth the price you pay for it.

I’m going to begin a multi-part series on the increasing importance for web designers to begin designing for widescreen display laptops.

My PC finally gave out on my yesterday morning. My best guess is the motherboard crashed, won’t even turn on. I currently am working on three websites for a local client and so I had no choice. I badly needed a laptop for remote presentations and while travelling. Yet I need my laptop to display correctly at 1024 x 768 pixel dimensions. What I found works perfecly after some tweeking. I purchased an Acer Aspire 5570Z preloaded with Windows Vista Basic. It’s a nice setup but what happens is that when I set my display up for 1024 x 768 the screen looks stretched and makes it difficult to view the colors well. So, I took my desktop monitor and plugged it into my laptop external display port and set my system up for an extended desktop.

My laptop display is set at 1280 x 800 for optimal viewing for this laptop. My old desktop display is configured through Vista for 1024 x 768 and I now have a dual view of my websites in both views.

This has also called my attention to the fact that many, many internet users browse using laptop with 1280 x 800 display, therefore I will begin designing sites for the following:

IE 6, IE7, Mozilla, and Opera with optimal viewing at both 1024 x 768 AND 1280 x 800.

I will describe these techniques as this series continues…

While I will not make a direct reference to any particular person or situation, this is my personal blog site. This is where I advise, teach, preach, lecture, and yes, sometimes even ventilate my frustrations and angers.

Rules for all clients to remember -

1. Just as your time is valuable, so is mine. If you choose to use it, please use it wisely. I must use my time wisely in order to successfully complete my projects.

2. Always shop around before buying. Make intelligent choices. I must make intelligent decisions, my career depends on it.

3. Would you like your clients to abuse your kindness? Would you like to be underpaid for the services & products you provide? If not, don’t do it to your service providers.

4. Be honest with me if you expect me to be honest with you.

5. If you praise my work and services to my face, have the courage to do so with others you deal with. Otherwise keep your mouth shut. It only makes you sound like an idiot.

Just ventilating…
